Above Guideline Increase

To make renting more affordable, big landlords should be banned from abusing the Above Guideline Rent Increase process.

Rent is more than enough to cover maintenance.

TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO:

WHEREAS nearly half of Ontarians already face unaffordable housing costs, spending over one-third of their income on rent; and

WHEREAS Above Guideline Rent Increases (AGIs) can significantly raise the price of rent, and corporate landlords are exploiting the AGI process to exceed the yearly rent increase limits; and

WHEREAS the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) requires landlords to maintain their properties using rent for upkeep, a law that is poorly enforced, resulting in many tenants complaining about landlords ignoring maintenance requests and keeping buildings in chronic disrepair for years; and

WHEREAS landlords then apply for AGIs for cosmetic improvements that increase a building's value but not its living conditions;

WE THE UNDERSIGNED PETITION THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO TO: Ban the use of Above Guideline Increases (AGIs) on all buildings with six or more units. This ban will stop large landlords from exploiting loopholes in the RTA to increase profits at the expense of tenants' financial stability and living conditions.
