Bill 185, the “Cutting Red Tape to Build More Homes Act, 2024” has a misleading title, will likely make it harder to increase the number of homes Ontario builds, increase the cost of newly-built homes, and create conditions that could give rise to corruption in the land use planning process; and
Bill 185 has removed any meaningful Ontario Land Tribunal oversight with potential for multi-billion-dollar municipal decisions to say “yes” to wasteful and environmentally harmful greenfield sprawl, while simultaneously empowering land speculators to appeal decisions to say “no” to sprawl; and
Bill 185 allows abuse of Ontario Land Tribunal appeals to obstruct municipal efforts to remove exclusionary zoning and permit dense, environmentally friendly infill family housing within existing neighbourhoods; and
Bill 185 is designed to promote sprawl, threatening Ontario’s high-quality farmland, significant natural ecosystems, and habitats for endangered species;
We demand that the provincial government repeal Schedule 12 of Bill 185 to
prioritize the development of sustainable and affordable housing.
