WHEREAS Disqualifying translated works and graphic novels punishes publishers and erases many outstanding francophone and indigenous works;
WHEREAS additional revenue from producing more graphic novels and translated works would create business opportunities and local jobs, and deliver diverse, quality content;
WHEREAS studies show that reading graphic novels helps develop critical thinking and information literacy skills;
WHEREAS translated works offer a reshaping of narrative and a hybrid of cultural elements, and therefore should be considered distinct from untranslated works.
WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, PETITION THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO AS FOLLOWS:
to expand the Ontario Book Publishing Tax credit to include translations and graphic novels by amending c. 11, Sched. A, s. 95 (14) of the Taxation Act, 2007.
