Whereas each year more than 2,000 Ontarians die from opioid poisoning; and
Whereas data indicates that for every opioid toxicity death, roughly 15 non-fatal overdoses may occur that require intervention with tools such as naloxone; and
Whereas Naloxone can safely be administered by bystanders to reverse opioid toxicities as they are occurring. Many opioid toxicity events are occurring in public places. Ensuring that naloxone kits are available to members of the public may prevent tragedies from occurring. Co-locating these Naloxone kits where AED defibrillators are housed would offer access to lifesaving tools in public spaces where opioid overdoses may occur.
We, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to: Immediately pass the Save a Life Act (Naloxone Kit Registration and Public Access Act), 2026; and Take meaningful action to reduce preventable deaths due to opioid overdoses by increasing access to naloxone in public spaces.
