Put Canadian Books in Schools

WHEREAS for too long, American literature has been overrepresented in Ontario schools. From elementary classrooms to university lecture halls, Canadian voices continue to be sidelined, disconnecting students from the diverse perspectives and identities that shape our national narrative;

WHEREAS this is not because we lack exceptional Canadian books—it is because the sheer volume and dominance of American content prevents Canadian stories from surfacing and gaining their rightful prominence;

WHEREAS of the top 20 books taught in Ontario schools, only three are Canadian. The rest are either American or British;

WHEREAS 1,600 Canadian books are published every year by Canadian-owned, Ontario-based publishers;

WHEREAS Canadian kids need to see themselves, their community, and their history—their lives—on the page. From the Paper Bag Princess’s fearless quest, to Frenchie’s northern escape protecting Indigenous dreams, to Salma sharing food and comfort during difficult transitions—Canadian representation matters.

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, PETITION THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO AS FOLLOWS:

to create an accessible and dedicated fund for public schools and libraries to purchase books produced by Ontario’s independent publishers.
